چکیده
Calorie restriction has been known formany decades to extend the life span of rodents. Since the more recent discovery that a long-term reduction in nutrient intake also extends life span in nearly every invertebrate model organism used for aging research, the mechanisms behind the longevity benefits of this intervention have been under intense scrutiny. While models have been developed in yeast, worms, and flies, the molecular mechanisms governing life span extension by calorie restriction remain controversial, resulting in great anticipation of mammalian studies testing these models. Here we discuss the links between nutrient reduction and enhanced longevity with emphasis on evolutionarily conserved nutrient

The Effect of 12 Weeks of Aerobic Training with or without Dietary Restriction on the Expression Levels of SIRT3, PGC1-α and SOD2 of Soleusmuscle in Male Rats
Background and Objectives: Background and Objectives: Recently, synergistic effect of dietary restriction (DR) on the exercise induced adaptations has attracted the attention of researchers. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of 12 weeks of dietary restriction with or without aerobic training on the gene expression or mRNA of SIRT3, PGC1-α and SOD2 proteins of soleusmuscle tiss...
متن کاملAppetite for reproduction: dietary restriction, aging and the mammalian gonad
The major physiologic theory of aging, the disposable soma theory, links dietary restriction (DR), also known as calorie or food restriction, to prolonged lifespan and makes specific predictions about the effects of aging and DR on reproduction. A recent study in BMC Biology profiling the effects of aging and DR on gonadal gene expression provides novel molecular evidence that has a significant...
متن کاملDietary restriction affects lifespan but not cognitive aging in Drosophila melanogaster.
Dietary restriction extends lifespan in a wide variety of animals, including Drosophila, but its relationship to functional and cognitive aging is unclear. Here, we study the effects of dietary yeast content on fly performance in an aversive learning task (association between odor and mechanical shock). Learning performance declined at old age, but 50-day-old dietary-restricted flies learned as...
متن کاملEffects of a Combination of Dietary Restriction and Exercise Training on Myocardial Apoptosis in Male Rats
Background and Objectives: Apoptosis plays a key role in pathogenesis of various cardiovascular diseases due to loss of terminally differentiated cardiac myocytes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate effects of combined dietary restriction and aerobic training on indices of myocardial apoptosis in male rats. Materials and Methods: In this study, 32 three-month-old male rats wer...
متن کاملDietary restriction with and without caloric restriction for healthy aging
Caloric restriction is the most effective and reproducible dietary intervention known to regulate aging and increase the healthy lifespan in various model organisms, ranging from the unicellular yeast to worms, flies, rodents, and primates. However, caloric restriction, which in most cases entails a 20-40% reduction of food consumption relative to normal intake, is a severe intervention that re...
